Carter will not seek a new term in office on City Commission

Andrew Carter is finishing out his second term in office, and by year’s end someone new will be taking over his seat.

Who that will be is still an open question, but one that is finalized is Carter deciding that he will not try for a third term in office on the Cedartown City Commission.

Carter, station manager and the voice of Cedartown Bulldogs sporting events and many other shows and more on WGAA Radio, announced today that he will not be looking for a third term in office as life changes have forced him to decide between Commission and family, and he chose family.

Along with his radio duties, Carter is also the Music Director at First Baptist Church of Rockmart and spent many years involved with community organizations. Oh, he also plays trombone with the Roman Festival Brass. Saying Carter is busy is an understatement.

Changes in his personal life are forcing him to take on new responsibilities that require him to step down when his term expires at year’s end.

“As my time on the commission draws to a close, my hope it that the next generation of leaders will find their calling to serve and answer that calling,” Carter posted in an announcement on social media. “I am thankful for all those who have supported me and have prayed for me while I have been in office. I am forever grateful!”

The two-term Commissioner was at one point serving as the Commission Chair over the city.

Qualifying has arrived for our local municipal elections coming up this November. I have been so honored to have served on the Cedartown City Commission for the past 8 years, including two of those years as chairman.

As a collective group, the city commissioners have been unified in our vision and my hope is that will continue for many years to come. It has been a joy and privilege to serve with this wonderful group and to work with a couple of incredible city managers and the best city administrative staff anywhere.

However, the time has come for me to step aside. I will not be seeking a third term on the Cedartown City Commission this year. I will be serving out the remainder of my term which will expire at the end of 2023.

I can’t help but look back at some of the incredible individuals who I have worked with and their undeniable love for their city. There is nothing that compares to being in public service.

I will always cherish my time representing the citizens of Cedartown. It has been a humbling and rewarding experience.

As my time on the commission draws to a close, my hope it that the next generation of leaders will find their calling to serve and answer that calling. I am thankful for all those who have supported me and have prayed for me while I have been in office. I am forever grateful!
