Help Haidyn get a Home

A Cedartown family needs your help to ensure that a child named Haidyn gets a chance to experience the joy of having a home with her family before it is too late.

A GoFundMe was started in recent days and is already up to nearly $150,000 of a $400,000 goal to help the family of Haidyn Fowler purchase a cabin that recently came available after the passing of a neighboring family’s relative who lived there, one that would allow wheelchair access and some of the needed equipment already in place for her medical needs.

Carrie Fowler explained that her daughter has Sanfilippo Syndrome – a form of childhood dementia – that since the age of 5 has slowly left Haidyn wheelchair bound, requiring that she have a feeding tube and unable to speak anymore.

She was a growing and normal child through her toddler years, but the family began to notice regression in her development around the age of three. At first, Haidyn was diagnosed as autistic. But the more Carrie learned about autism and the further Haidyn’s physical abilities regressed, she believed something else was wrong. Finally the doctors were able to find the real cause with the diagnosis of Sanfilippo Syndrome.

“Haidyn has is often referred to as a childhood form of Alzheimer’s or dementia. classified as a childhood form of dementia,” Fowler explained. “She depends on us for literally everything.”

The diagnosis came right as the Fowler family moved in with her husband Caleb’s parents into their basement of the Cedartown-area home five years ago with plans to build a house on the property so they could be next doors. Then Haidyn was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, and their world was flipped upside down. All of their money has gone toward medical bills and equipment for Haidyn, making the dream of having a home for their family out of reach.

“We’ve spent the last five years going to tons of different specialists,” she said.

Fowler thought their dream of home ownership was lost forever, but the cabin they hope to purchase “fell into our laps” after they learned of the passing of an elderly neighbor whose home was going to be put up for sale by the family.

“They told us they were willing to work with us, and that they would contact us first if we were able to buy it,” she said.

But the numbers weren’t adding up. Unable to afford to build or buy because of all their money going toward medical bills, Fowler decided to turn toward a potential source of help: the community via GoFundMe. Especially now that Haidyn’s time left with the family might be limited with a terminal diagnosis.

“We would like to have a forever home, that will also be a place we grieve in, in the future,” Fowler said. “We do not know how long we have with Haidyn. That is why we feel like time is running out to give her a place of our own.”

Since sharing their story and starting the fundraiser, more than $148,000 in donations have come in to help with the purchase cost of the house. Fowler said since the fundraiser started in recent days, she’s been overwhelmed with the emotions caused by those who have been willing to help them with their dream to give Haidyn a home.

“We very much appreciate all those who have given already to help us make this dream come true for Haidyn and our family,” she said. “This proves there is still so much good in the world and people who do want to help make a difference for others. I hope one day I can pay it back and do the same for someone else.”

Polk EMA: Snow unlikely over the weekend for local area

3 (6)

Flurries MAY occur, but don’t expect them across Polk County as Emergency Management officials tracking the forecast through the weekend despite some models that indicate the potential for snow they aren’t finding it likely.

NWS Peachtree City already said there were very low probabilities for snow in Northwest Georgia, but did note some weather models didn’t entirely rule it out for the deep south amid another cold front pushing through with rain.

EMA officials in an alert about the weekend forecast expect only light rain moving through the area along with a noticeable drop in temperatures. However expect the thermometer to rise again on Saturday into the 50s before dropping with an additional front pushing through Saturday night into Sunday.

If any snow falls overnight, it’ll be in the higher elevations of North Georgia and shouldn’t cause any issues in the local area.

Where the impact might be felt is during another overnight push of rain through the area, bringing wet weather and falling temperatures to create a situation where moving into the Sunday morning there is potential for black ice.

Right now, NWS Peachtree City is not predicting rainfall for Saturday night (as of ~5:45 p.m. on 1/16/26), but it is worth noting that in some models they have predicted precipitation.

“EMA will continue to monitor conditions closely and coordinate with the National Weather Service to ensure timely awareness if the forecast changes,” officials noted in their statement to local media this afternoon.

Right now the real threat of snow and ice is in central and east Georgia heading toward the coast, where snow chances are more likely during the morning hours on Sunday in spots as far south as Americus and as far east as Louisville could see the potential for at least a dusting.

Where does that leave Polk County? At the moment with just temperatures rising, dropping, and remaining cold heading into the MLK Holiday on Monday.
