Rescue operations overnight shifted to search and recovery as thus far no survivors have been found after a plane coming in for landing at Reagan National Airport in the Washington, D.C. area collided with a military helicopter and fell to a crash into the Potomac River.
The American Airlines commuter flight from Wichita, Kansas had 60 souls on board at the time on a direct flight into the nation’s capital on Wednesday night at 8:47 p.m. EST. The military helicopter – a UH-60 Blackhawk – was on a training mission in the area at the time with three on board.
So far, no survivors have been found after both crashed after the midair collision into the Potomac River just offshore from Reagan National Airport’s looping approach into one of its runways.
Officials had not yet been able to determine the cause of the incident as of this morning as recovery efforts were still underway.
Both aircraft went to the icy waters of the Potomac on Wednesday night in one of the deadliest crashes on U.S. soil in decades.
All told, 67 victims died in the crash. It is one the deadliest in the past two decades. More than 300 first responders were on scene throughout the night, and investigators from several Federal agencies have already begun their work.

Flights resumed this morning from Reagan National at 11 a.m.
President Donald Trump and other government leaders including new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provided comments about the crash during a press release that was underway in the past hour.
Officials have not yet determined what caused the two craft to collide at such a low altitude.

The President has already appointed an interim FAA Director Chris Rocheleau to take over the agency. President Trump also made comments blaming former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s diversity and inclusion promotion efforts under the former administration for slipping standards in various areas of the federal government.
He told acting Transportation Director Sean Duffy, “It’s not your fault” during the press conference, per Associated Press reporting.
No victims names have yet been listed, but among those who were killed included members of the U.S. Figure Skating Team.
