Report: Huntsville man going 99 mph on Highway 278 found with cash, gun, and marijuana following an arrest

Jarvez Rasheed Cooper

A Huntsville, Alabama man in a rented car was clocked going 99 mph on Highway 278 on Wednesday afternoon, and during his arrest was found with a handgun, more than $12,000 in cash, and while being searched in jail a bag of marijuana, according to Polk County Police reports.

Jarvez Rasheed Cooper, 19, of 3723 Steadman Drive, Huntsville, Alabama, remained in jail with no bond set on a felony charge of crossing state/county guard lines with weapons, intoxicants, drugs without consent, along with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, speeding in excess of maximum limits and reckless driving charges after police clocked him near the 100 mph mark while other traffic was going the speed limit in a rented Volkswagen sedan with Florida plates.

According to a report on the arrest, Cooper was pulled over near the intersection of Highway 278 and Coots Lake Road just outside of Rockmart around 4 p.m. on Wednesday. When officers spoke with Cooper, he handed over a paper license from Alabama. They additionally reported “a very strong odor of raw marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.”

However, police didn’t find the drug in the car. Instead, Cooper reported having a loaded Glock 9 mm handgun and a permit to carry, a bag with diamond earrings inside, and $12,667 in cash. Cooper originally told police he believed it was “$8,000 to $9,000” in bills that they found inside the vehicle.

Police also found a fake Georgia driver’s license that Cooper admitted he used to get into clubs due to being underage.

Initially, Cooper was being booked for reckless driving and speeding in excess of maximum limits, but additional charges were tacked on once he was taken to the Polk County Jail and searched.

Police reported that a deputy at the jail found a bag of marijuana weighing in less than an ounce in his shoe, and additional charges were filed against Cooper as well.

He remained in the Polk County Jail as of the time of this posting with no bail set on the felony and misdemeanor charges.
