Reversing course, President Trump rescinds order on grant and loan pause

|

Local leadership can breathe a temporary sigh of relief after the Executive Order pausing federal grant and loan distributions was pulled back by President Donald Trump by midweek.

The order was announced on Monday night, and by Tuesday officials on every level across the country who have dealings with federal grant and loan programs to fund a variety of projects and initiatives ranging from health care to education to local building projects were scrambling to find answers to what was going on.

By Tuesday night, a Federal Judge had already blocked the order and now? It has been rescinded.

The original memo on the pause sent from the Office of Management and Budget at the White House was followed by a two sentence one today rescinding that memo that went out and caused confusion and panic across the nation.

The President has made other moves related to removing DEI hires and initiatives as follow-on from orders he signed during his first days in office rolling back many of the programs and initiatives instituted by former President Joe Biden’s administration.

His latest tactic included a offer to pay any federal employees who want to leave their roles most of a year’s salary for their voluntarily resigning.

Several million people work for the federal government in various capacities, and that initiative could cost billions and leave many unfilled positions and incomplete work on empty desks across the nation.

Rescue operations overnight shifted to search and recovery as thus far no survivors have been found after a plane coming in for landing at Reagan National Airport in the Washington, D.C. area collided with a military helicopter and fell to a crash into the Potomac River.

The American Airlines commuter flight from Wichita, Kansas had 60 souls on board at the time on a direct flight into the nation’s capital on Wednesday night at 8:47 p.m. EST. The military helicopter – a UH-60 Blackhawk – was on a training mission in the area at the time with three on board.

So far, no survivors have been found after both crashed after the midair collision into the Potomac River just offshore from Reagan National Airport’s looping approach into one of its runways.

Officials had not yet been able to determine the cause of the incident as of this morning as recovery efforts were still underway.

Both aircraft went to the icy waters of the Potomac on Wednesday night in one of the deadliest crashes on U.S. soil in decades.

All told, 67 victims died in the crash. It is one the deadliest in the past two decades. More than 300 first responders were on scene throughout the night, and investigators from several Federal agencies have already begun their work.

The President has already appointed an interim FAA Director Chris Rocheleau to take over the agency. President Trump also made comments blaming former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s diversity and inclusion promotion efforts under the former administration for slipping standards in various areas of the federal government.

He told acting Transportation Director Sean Duffy, “It’s not your fault” during the press conference, per Associated Press reporting.
