Rockmart celebrates with ribbon cutting for new Amphitheater

It doesn’t have an official name yet, but local officials gathered earlier this week to celebrate the opening of a new outdoor performance space Polk County will get to enjoy thanks to the City of Rockmart’s work that spanned several years to complete.

Construction started last summer and wrapped up during the winter months, but now that spring has sprung it was finally time to cut the ribbon on the new Rockmart Amphitheater along Euharlee Creek sitting behind Church Street Manor. It sits catty-corner from Downtown Rockmart on the opposite bank as South Marble Street, bringing new opportunities for concerts, theatrical performances and more to the area.

The new attraction was built with a combined effort of grants and additional dollars to build the new venue and follows a trend with the butterfly-styled roof in new facilities – including Lankford Corner at the Silver Comet Trail events center in Downtown Cedartown.

The ribbon cutting saw not just Rockmart City Council, but also Polk County Commissioners join in the celebration during a Tuesday morning event.

The amphitheater’s first event was announced last week and is set to help Rockmart celebrate Georgia Cities Week on Tuesday, April 21 starting at 6 p.m.

Free hot dogs and drinks will provide a picnic-style dinner for families to enjoy along with the opportunity for kids to enjoy some fun with a Touch-A-Truck setup in the parking lot, and live music from Them Mixon Boys.

Burn ban in effect for Saturday – all outdoor fires must be out by sunset or face a fine

Polk County, Cedartown and Rockmart fire officials are worried that conditions tomorrow are just too good for causing serious damage by fire. Low humidity and high winds combining with cooler temps for March 28’s forecast means one thing: a burn ban is in effect.

Officials sent out a countywide text message this afternoon announcing the ban for the day on Saturday, noting that anyone caught burning outside under any circumstances on Saturday will face a $250 fine.

Georgia Forestry officials will also not be providing any burn permits over the weekend.

“All outdoor burning is strictly prohibited, without exception,” the message read. “All fires currently burning today must be extinguished by sunset today.”

Temps are set to drop overnight into the 40s, and only get into the 60s tomorrow with winds at 10 mph, and gusts up to 25 mph according to the National Weather Service’s forecast as of this posting.

A fire weather watch is in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday.
