New dedicated economic development entity launches to drive regional growth and attract businesses to Georgia’s second-largest city
COLUMBUS — Columbus and the broader region are taking a bold step forward in shaping the future of economic development with the launch of Choose Columbus. This newly established organization promises to bring fresh structure and renewed focus to job creation, capital investment, business recruitment and retention as well as overall regional prosperity. Leading this effort is a veteran economic developer, Missy Kendrick, who will officially assume the role of President and CEO on May 12.
“Choose Columbus is a new focused investment singularly focused on job creation in Columbus,” said Mayor Skip Henderson. “Missy Kendrick’s experience, strategic vision and commitment to Georgia’s economic prosperity make her the ideal leader to launch this groundbreaking initiative.”
With over 30 years of experience in the field, Kendrick brings a strategic perspective. She’s successfully led similar initiatives — most recently as the first president of a restructured economic development organization in Rome, Georgia. Over her career, she has helped bring more than 1,700 jobs and $3 billion in capital investment to Georgia communities. Now, she returns to the Columbus area to be closer to her family and lead a new chapter in regional growth.
“There is huge potential in Columbus — from continued redevelopment and great quality of life to excellent education opportunities.” Kendrick said. “I am honored to be the one to harness these strengths and lead the path to growth and opportunity for this community.”
Choose Columbus will focus on attracting new businesses to the region as well as expanding and retaining current industries. The organization will work with businesses on customized incentives, including tax abatements, infrastructure development, available property identification, expedited permitting and workforce training programs. Serving as the primary liaison between the Columbus region and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, this entity will enhance the city’s visibility and competitiveness across key industries including aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing and information security.
“We recognize that we’re operating in an increasingly competitive market requiring bold, innovative solutions to serve today’s businesses,” said Selvin Hollingsworth, Chair of the Development Authority of Columbus. “With Choose Columbus and Missy Kendrick at the helm, we are embracing that challenge and doubling down on efforts to attract businesses to the greater Columbus region.”
Choose Columbus will be housed alongside VisitColumbusGA and the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce at 118 W. 11th Street. This intentional space will ensure close alignment across marketing, tourism and business development — all part of the long-term strategic plan and vision for a more competitive and prosperous region.
An official unveiling event featuring Choose Columbus’ new brand and new office space is planned for May.
