Polk County turned out the early vote for 2025, ending the state with a double-digit percentage of population to cast ballots before Election Day and among some of the top in Georgia in turnout by number of registered voters.

An off-year vote saw some 12.6% of the registered voters make their decisions early, finishing in the Top 15 of the state in turnout so far.

According to the final tally provided by the Secretary of State’s office as of this posting, some 3,360 ballots were cast early this year for the 2025 vote during the three weeks ahead of Election Day on Tuesday.

Per the Polk County Elections Department’s breakdown of the tallies, 1,912 of those were cast at the Cedartown precinct for early voting, and 1,387 ballots were cast in Rockmart. An additional 77 absentee ballots were sent out from the Elections Department to local residents, and 61 had been returned by the end of early voting on Friday.

Tuesday’s vote coming up has a few items on the ballot.

Countywide, Polk County is being asked to decide on a local homestead exemption for senior voters on property taxes.

The City of Cedartown is also asking voters to decide on a Redevelopment Powers ballot initiative, which would allow for the creation of Tax Allocation Districts.

City elections this year weren’t needed for candidates in council and commission seats since they were all filled without challengers in the races.

Braswell does have local elections this year with seven different candidates in the running for the mayor’s and council seats.

This year’s ballot also includes a statewide redo vote on the Public Service Commission race from 2022 that went through court proceedings and was ultimately determined to require a revote on the seats.

Aragon Council holding special called meeting on Thursday

The City of Aragon is planning on purchasing some new gear, if the City Council goes along with the plan.

Mayor Judd Fee reported that the city plans to hold a 4 p.m. special called session on Thursday, January 22, to decide on the purchase of two police vehicles and a used fire truck.

Fee reported that the truck in question is being purchased from the City of Braswell for a specific task, and not to fight fires.

Instead, it’ll be a truck utilized by Public Works for the high pressure water system on the truck to clear out drains and in other areas of use where a lot of water for specific tasks.

No additional agenda items are up for discussions or decision.

Check back for more on the purchases as the information becomes available.
