A man was found dead in the middle of the highway late Thursday night and was pronounce dead after midnight Friday morning, according to Polk County Coroner Norman Smith.

Smith reported that the unidentified male was found in the roadway at Highway 278 just west of Substation Road just before midnight within the Cedartown city limits. A passerby found the body and Cedartown Police were called out to the scene.

The male was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. Friday at the scene by Smith. He died of wounds causes by blunt force trauma.

Cedartown Police called in the Georgia State Patrol to investigate the incident and the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was called upon to determine what happened.

The body of the unidentified man is being transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy and identification.
