PSD: two cases of COVID-19 reported, health updates coming weekly

The Polk School District have had reported cases of COVID-19 in one school, but the numbers reported in the community are not accurate according to Superintendent Laurie Atkins.

Atkins reported that as soon as the students were notified that they had tested positive for the virus, they were immediately kept at home to quarantine and prevent any potential spread of the virus to other students.

Both students did come to Cedartown High School as the academic year began not knowing they were positive for COVID-19. Atkins said the district is following state and federal guidelines from the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on ensuring that the campus is clean after the potential exposure.

No additional cases have yet to be reported to the district at this time, Atkins said. When cases are reported from students or parents, immediate measure are taken to ensure the safety of other students and staff on campus per the district’s plans already approved to return to schools.

She said no other campus in the district has reported cases at this time. In a statement online earlier, the district cited false reports circulating about the number of COVID-19 cases in schools in the district. The message from the district reported that anyone who might have potentially been exposed to the virus will be notified by letter and phone call.

In order to update those concerned about the status of the virus in local schools, they plan to issue weekly OneCall to every parent in the district to provide a health report for each campus.

“To stay informed, it is imperative you have provided your child’s school with your correct contact information,” the statement added. “Please help us dispel any rumors that hinder the progress we have made this school year. We appreciate your continued partnership in keeping the health and well-being of our students our number one priority.”
