Sorrell seeks community-wide support for bell ringing on Christmas Eve, proclamation approved by Rockmart City Council

The City of Rockmart has joined their support to a campaign to show some holiday spirit and community-wide love on Christmas Eve this year.

Jannah Sorrells, who in the last post was beginning the organizing effort online to get people to go out on their front steps at 6 p.m. before Santa’s big ride around the world and ring a bell and sing Christmas carols to spread cheer around Polk County after a year that can best be described as “depressing.” (My word.)

“I ran across a post on Facebook that a lady in the UK posted with a very simple concept,” Sorrell explained to the Rockmart City Council during their December 8 meeting. “When I read this, I couldn’t help but think what an awesome idea this was, and how great it would be if the people of the community could come together and do this.”

She asked that everyone in the county participate and help it spread across the country and world.

“My hope is that it spreads further than that,” she said. “I’m a Cedartown resident, have been all my life. I’m hoping that this at the very least can become a countywide event, and i would for it to become more than that. I’m hoping that it becomes a tradition that my kids, my grandchildren that this is something that we can enjoy for years to come.”

Sorrell was in for a surprise she wasn’t expecting. Not only did the council give their full support for the idea, they put it in official writing.

Mayor Sherman Ross read off and then got unanimous approval for a proclamation that December 24, 2020 will be Ring the Bell Rockmart Day.

The mayor added that he would like to see participation from local churches in the effort as well and hear their bells ring across the city on Christmas Eve.

The City of Rockmart is also officially challenging the other municipalities around Polk County to get involved in the effort as well, and show their support for the campaign.

For those who plan to participate, share this post with the hashtag #RingTheBellPolk and help spread the word!
