After clearing off an old mural and painting primer and a background coat, the next step in the process for a new painting on the side of the Brackett Cleaners building began to take shape thanks to an evening portion of the project that required some help from those who have already done this kind of work.
Rockmart High School student Elizabeth Stone got some help from area artists and a projector and took the evening to trace out the design going on the wall, which features the words “Good Vibes” on the side.
Stone said it was her intention to provide a positive message to the community with the design.
“I’m trying to spread good thoughts throughout the community and I’m trying to depict that in the drawing,” she said. “I’m trying to bring everyone together with happy thoughts and happy vibes.”
She added that she was thankful for the help that she’s receiving with the mural project, meant to act as one of several portfolio pieces as she prepares as a sophomore now to prepare her application for the Savannah College of Art and Design.
“I’ve been searching up and figuring out what I need to do to get into SCAD,” she said. “To me, it’s really big. To be able to put this in my portfolio would be amazing for me.”
Inspired by her grandfather’s love of art, Stone said her passion for art comes from watching his creativity take shape through her life thus far.
“He inspired me to be more like him,” she said.
“It’s crazy that I’ve been given the opportunity to do something like this, it’s astronomical,” she added.
Now moving into the next stage of the piece, plans are to start work on filling in the color of the mural – depending on the weather forecast for Tuesday morning.
The mural project, organized with the help of The Perch on Marble owner Stacey Lovvorn, is being completed in part to help Stone have additional artwork to include in a portfolio she hopes to submit to The Savannah College of Art and Design.
