BREAKING NEWS: Rockmart High School on lockdown, suspect Jimmy Blackmon believed to be in area around Rice Road

Polk County Police have called off their search at this time and are letting up their perimeter around Rice Road after spending the past several hours looking for Jimmy Brian Blackmon in the area after a tip didn’t pan out.

Chief Kenny Dodd said there is no immediate evidence after searching the area surrounding Rice Road, just north of Rockmart High School, for clues of Blackmon’s whereabouts. The search for the murder suspect remains on overall as the 50-year-old is still on the run from law enforcement on murder warrants.

They returned the area around Blackmon’s home after a tip came in that he had returned, but Dodd said it didn’t pan out.

Polk County Police had help in this afternoon’s search of the area from the Polk County, the Paulding County and Floyd County Sheriffs offices, the U.S. Marshals, the Aragon and Rockmart Police departments and officers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources joined forces on the ground and a Georgia State Patrol and Department of Natural Resources helicopter from each agency aided in the air.

Polk County Police remain on the scene and helicopter support is in the air with high tech equipment look for any signs of the suspect believed to be Jimmy Brian Blackmon in the area around Rice Road.

Chief Kenny Dodd reported that infrared cameras that can sense the heat of people on the ground are being employed by two helicopters on a perimeter search around Rice Road this afternoon, and law enforcement officials from several agencies – including the Georgia State Patrol – are on the ground assisting in the search.

Reports from the schools is that they are having no issues and are awaiting an all-clear from law enforcement to lift a code blue lockdown, according to a posting on Facebook from Rockmart High School’s account on Polk.Today.

Police have spent the past five days looking for Blackmon, 50, wanted for the murder of Ginger Blackmon on Sunday evening at their Rice Road residence.



Jimmy Brian Blackmon, 50, of a Rice Road address in the Rockmart area, is wanted by the Polk County Police for murder.

Dodd said a tip from police about Blackmon’s whereabouts brought them to Rice Road this afternoon. He continues to elude police and is considered armed and dangerous.

Blackmon is 5-foot-8, 190 pounds and has dark brown hair and brown eyes (see photo.)

Police have the area just up from the Rockmart High and Rockmart Middle School campuses on high alert as they search around Rice Road for who they think might be the suspect in Sunday’s shooting.

Chief Kenny Dodd reported that officers have a perimeter setup around Rice Road, and have helicopter support in the air looking for who might potentially be Jimmy Brian Blackmon, wanted for murder in the death of Ginger Blackmon on Sunday evening.

He said an eyewitness tipped police they they believe he was seen returning to the area of his home on a dead end road .

The identity of the suspect has not yet been confirmed.

Lockdowns are in place at Rockmart High School and Rockmart Middle School as Polk County Police are chasing a suspect in the area, and additional support is on the way

Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd reported that they are not yet sure of the suspect’s identity, but have called in helicopter support for the area around Rice Road at this time.

Both schools are on a precautionary lockdown, no issues have been raised but officials have done so out of an abundance of caution according to Superintendent Laurie Atkins.
