Former landmark on West Avenue demolished

A once-thriving West Avenue landmark structure at the corner of Furnace Street was torn down earlier in the day, ending a century-long history with some sweeps of an excavator’s arm.
Per the Polk County Historical Society’s July article on the structure dubbed the Wayside (Cedartown) Inn, it was built in 1920 by the Adamson family and used by the employees of the Cedartown Cotton and Export Company for a community center and clubhouse, and designed to be a copy of the still-standing Wayside Inn in Boston, Massachusetts.
You can find the full history of the building at the Polk County Historical Society website.
The building hadn’t been in regular use since the 1990s when the Blizzard of 1993 and a tornado almost destroyed the building that year, per the PCHS article.
Check back for additional photos on Tuesday of the site as it is cleared.
