Dr. Sherri Garrett, a native of Cedartown, GA acquired her postsecondary education at Clark College in Atlanta , Georgia, earning a BA degree in English.
While attending Clark, in 1973, she was initiated into the Alpha Pi Chapter of Alpha Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
She continued her education, earning a Master’s Degree in Curriculum /Supervision from West Georgia College and a PhD in Language and Literacy from the University of Georgia. During her career as an educator, Dr Garrett served as a high school English teacher, principal, curriculum director, literacy coach, and assistant professor.
She also held various administrative positions with McGraw-Hill and McDouglas Littrell Publishing Companies. Her affiliation with these companies and her love for reading led her to seek ways to provide books to those in need of help in reading and in need of materials to read, as shown in her active participation in Polk Ferse Readers.
In 1977, Dr. Garrett affiliated with Theta Omicron Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. which serves Polk, Floyd, Bartow and Carroll counties.
In 1989-1990, Garrett served as the Chapter’s President. During her tenure, Theta Omicron Omega Chapter sponsored two very successful Heritage Balls as a way of recognizing Black History Month. At this time, the Chapter sponsored a book fair and gave donations of children’s books to community agencies. Garrett is a very active participant with Ferst Readers.
Sherri has been an active participant in all facets of the organization! Presently, she is serving as Chairman of both the Nomination and the Protocol Committees. She has previously chaired the Archives Committee, Standard Committees and served on many of the other committees necessary to carry on the business of the Chapter.
She served on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. 7th Boule‘ Kits and Souvenirs Committee. She, along with many sorority sisters, helped with registration for some 22,000-plus members gathering in Atlanta, GA in 2017 from all over the world.
Every year Theta Omicron Omega Chapter marks each Founder’s Day as an opportunity to recognize a member in the Chapter who stands out in their services in the organization’s programs! Garrett has been nominated for that honor.
The members will vote on the nominees at the February Meeting and the member with the most votes will become “Soror of the Year” and will be announced at Founder’s Day Celebration.
Dr. Sherri Garrett will be recognized by Theta Omicron Omega Chapter at its Founder’s Day Program for her services of ‘50 years’ as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She will be celebrated and crowned as a “Golden Soror”.
