Early voting during first week sees hundreds casting primary ballots ahead of May 24

The first week of early voting is coming to a close today, and with both precincts open Polk County has already seen hundreds of voters come into cast their ballots ahead of the May 24 primary.

A lot of this year’s elections will be settled during the primary, including local candidates for office in County Commission races, the Superior Court Judge race, and the 16th District State House race for 2022 should all be settled on the GOP ballot in the primary.

Polk County thus far has seen a total of 538 voters visit the Cedartown precinct at the Board of Elections office at 144 West Ave., and an additional 333 voters cast ballots as of Thursday afternoon in Rockmart. That’s a total of 871 ballots cast during the first four days of the primary.

Additionally, 134 absentee ballots have been issued to those requesting to vote by mail. None have yet been returned.

The daily breakdown looks like this:

  • Monday – Cedartown: 142, Rockmart: 80
  • Tuesday – Cedartown: 134, Rockmart: 80
  • Wednesday – Cedartown: 141, Rockmart: 95
  • Thursday – Cedartown: 121, Rockmart: 78

Those who want to cast a ballot can still get their primary selections in today before 5 p.m., when the precincts will close for the day.

This Saturday and next, voters will be able to visit either the Rockmart or Cedartown precincts to cast their primary ballots early as well. The May 7 and May 14 Saturday voting days will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both precincts.

Early voting lasts until May 20, and voters can visit one of the two precincts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The last day to request an absentee ballot is May 13, and it must be sent in by 5 p.m. per Elections Director Noah Beck.

Check back for total numbers for the first five days on Saturday morning.
