Early voting tallies pick up on Tuesday for March 18 election

The second day of Early Voting for the March 18 election picked up as more than 150 ballots were cast in Cedartown, and nearly 100 more in Rockmart to close out business.

The Board of Elections reported the combined figures as 257 ballots cast at the Cedartown precinct, and another 96 at the Rockmart precinct when the polls closed at 5 p.m. on February 25.

Monday kicked off the first of three weeks of early voting ahead of the March 18 special election for the state, giving Polk County residents the chance to vote across the area on a millage rate specially proposed by Polk School District for 1 mill of collections over up to a 20 year period to pay off $34 million in bonds they would like to sell for school-related building projects.

PSD requested the bond resolution go before voters back in January.

The other item on the ballot is strictly for the City of Cedartown: a Tax Allocation District proposal that would provide a certain amount of collections annually to be set aside for improvement of infrastructure in those specific districts (around the Highway 27 bypass/North Main Street commercial district and an area of downtown) if approved by voters.

The deal to bring a national grocery chain (rumored but not confirmed to be Publix) is dependent on whether Cedartown voters approve of the TAD or not.

Aragon was going to have a special election for a new city council member, but only one individual signed up to be on the ballot so David Spaulding will win the vote by default.

Voters can participate – if they registered before the deadline on Feb. 19 – at one of two locations in Polk County in early voting through March 14, 2025 on Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Both the Cedartown Precinct at the Goodyear Civic Center on Prior Street in Cedartown and the Nathan Dean Community Center on Goodyear Avenue in Rockmart will be open on weekdays.

Two Saturday voting days will be available: one on March 1 at both precincts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and another on March 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cedartown precinct only.

Check back for more updates on early voting tallies as they become available.
