The Polk County Board of Elections have been getting some angry calls in recent days from voters who are frustrated by the mail they’ve been getting from Political Action Committees and political parties who are trying to confuse people about their ballots.
Elections Coordinator Brande Coggins is one of the staff members who are fielding those calls, and what she hears time and again from the voter on the other line is that the Board of Elections has sent out mailers with misleading information about absentee ballots within.
She wants voters to know up front and clearly that those items coming in the mail – especially letters – have nothing to do with the Polk County Board of Elections. Coggins said none of the groups sending out the mail are affiliated with the Board of Elections in any way, and the misleading letters with a Board of Elections address on them are only the return address.
“We do send mail to voters if there is an issue with their absentee ballot (such as missing signatures on the return envelope) This correspondence will always have our office letterhead and the Polk County Seal on the letter itself,” Coggins said in an email in recent days over the issue.
She said the frustrating part is that they are coming from multiple sources, it is hard to pinpoint any particular group or party as the main source of material.
As previously mentioned here on Polk.Today, those who want to track their absentee ballot can do so by going to the Secretary of State’s My Voter Page, where a system has been setup for people to see when their ballot is coming, and that it is safely returned to the Board of Elections office.
Voters who haven’t requested a ballot can still do so through the Secretary of State’s website at this time, and they must have it back before a strict 7 p.m. deadline on Election Day. For those who don’t want to use the mail, drop the absentee ballot off at the Board of Elections office anytime through November 3 in a secure drop box at the County Administration office in Cedartown at 144 West Ave.
The goal for early voting this year in Polk County is 13,000 ballot cast by the close of business on Friday, Coggins said. As of the close of business on Saturday, some 10,100 ballots were cast.
