Sante Alana Duncan

An investigation remains underway after a former Cherokee Elementary School teacher was dismissed earlier in the month and turned herself in on a sexual assault charge on Tuesday.

Sante Alana Duncan, 27, of a 203 Mustang Drive, Dallas, was booked on a single charge of sexual assault by teacher/principal/assistant principal or other admins in sexual contact. She remained in custody this morning on the lone charge with no bond set.

Polk School District Superintendent Laurie Atkins said that the investigation remains underway and had no additional comment at this time about the incident that ended with Duncan turning herself in Tuesday afternoon. Duncan resigned from her job earlier in the month after being confronted with allegations.

The Polk School District Police is leading the investigation into the charge against Duncan.

Atkins said no student from Cherokee Elementary was involved in the incident.

Here’s a full statement from the District on the matter:

“Polk School District is aware of the arrest of Alana Duncan, a former teacher at Cherokee Elementary School.  When the PSD received information regarding Mrs. Duncan’s alleged conduct in early January, we immediately commenced an internal investigation.  When we confronted Mrs. Duncan with the allegations, she immediately resigned, and she is no longer an employee of the Polk School District.  The matter has been turned over to the PSD Police Department and the Tallapoosa Circuit District Attorney’s office, and they will have the PSD’s full cooperation going forward.  Because it is still a pending investigation, we are unable to comment further.  However, we do want to assure parents that the charges did not involve a student at Cherokee Elementary, and that at no time was any student at Cherokee at risk of harm from Mrs. Duncan.  The Polk School District is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students in all of our schools, and we will not tolerate any conduct by teachers or staff that is inconsistent with this mission.”
