Our House Domestic Violence Shelter hits the links for fundraiser
A trio of teams were honored after they teed off to see who was the best as part of the Our House Domestic Violence Shelter that helps the victims of domestic violence here in Polk County.
A group of 29 teams in total took part in the fundraiser with one of its biggest turnouts ever for the Friday tournament at the Cherokee Golf and Country Club.
The first place team this year was Top Tier Excavation & Land Development, who hit a 52 on the day in the four man squad.
Bremen Police took second place in the tournament with a score of 53.
Van Saunder’s team took third place with a score of 54.
The shelter is always in need of fundraising help and material donations of everything from diapers to clothes for families, but recent years have seen funding decreases from regular court contributions as the judicial system was severely limited in their ability to hear cases where fines are levied to help victims of domestic violence in the community.
Hundreds of thousands were lost in the meantime that Our House relied upon for staff funding and helping families stay together after escaping dire situations with abusive partners. Funds raised on Friday to help make up some of that shortfall, but it is never enough.
As of the end of September 2022, 882 crisis calls and 64 adults and 28 children were served within the shelter for the previous year, already well over the number of crisis calls served in all of 2021.
The 2021 figures saw 819 crisis calls, 74 adults and 37 were housed and outreach served another 71 victims. Calls have been going up for the past four years – the most drastic increase between 2020 and 2021, with the highest figures so far in 2022 before the year was over. Fewer victims were able to be served due to COVID CDC guidelines starting in 2020 as well.
