Man charged with murder returned to Polk County

A Rome man who was caught in Decatur in April and charged with murder in Polk County was brought to the jail on Wednesday to face justice locally.

The Polk County Jail noted in the arrest report today that Joseph Leroy Jones, 30, of 131 Howell St., Rome, was booked into custody on August 3 on two counts of malice murder, a felony charge of aggravated assault, and a felony charge of aggravated stalking.

Jones is charged for the suspected death of Monisha Sharae Leath, who has been missing since February. Though local police and Georgia Bureau of Investigations agents have yet to find her body, charges were filed against Jones in April after he was already in jail for other crimes in DeKalb County.

He has not had a bond hearing yet to determine whether he will be allowed to post bail.

District Attorney Jack Browning did note when asked about the case that hearings had not yet been set, nor motions filed for either the state or the defense.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said the investigation is ongoing with GBI being the primary investigating agency. The Cedartown Police Department is in communication and cooperation with the GBI.

Jones is charged more than a month after Leath was reported missing and search teams went out into the community in late February. Her whereabouts are still unknown, but the charges thus far have pointed to the likelihood that she died at the hands of Jones.

Those with information are encouraged to contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation or the Cedartown Police Department with further details.

Leath, a 32-year-old black female, was last seen on February 24 and was believed to be near the Floyd/Polk County line at the time. When she was last seen, she was five-foot-seven, 180 pounds and had a nostril piercing and a tattoo on her left hand.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Leath’s remains, provide that or any information pertaining to the case by immediately calling 1-800-597-8477 (TIPS), or report it anonymously at this GBI reporting link online.
