An Aragon man who was shot by a Georgia State Patrol trooper during a late-night chase on July 16 was taken into custody at the Polk County Jail on Monday afternoon.
Per the Sheriff’s Office report, Shannon Derell Thompson, 27, of an Aragon address, was taken into custody on Monday afternoon, July 19, at the jail after he was hospitalized for a gunshot wound following a chase that took police from Aragon to the Bartow County side of Taylorsville and back into Polk County before it ended with a short foot chase.
Thompson was charged with a felony for fleeing or attempting to elude police and misdemeanors for failure to yield when entering roadway, failure to maintain lane, driving on wrong side of roadway, lighted headlights/other lights required, no license on person, reckless driving, too fast for conditions and failure to yield. He remains in jail this morning without bail on the multiple charges.
Per a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation following the incident on July 18, Thompson was wounded during the chase after he fled from Aragon Police while a traffic stop was being conducted. GSP was requested for help along with the Polk County Police, and the chase went from Aragon to the Bartow County side of Taylorsville before a PIT maneuver was attempted.
Thompson went off the roadway at that point, and while driving back on the road headed toward a trooper who had given chase. The trooper fired several times and struck Thompson in the arm, who drove away and was ultimately stopped after a second PIT maneuver when the pursuit returned into Polk County, and he fled on foot.
Police deployed a Taser to Thompson to stop after chasing him into a wooded area. He was taken to Floyd Medical Center in Rome for treatment following the incident.
The GBI is still investigating the incident and will forward its findings to the Bartow County District Attorney for any potential action.
