Historic Trailblazers
First African American students to integrate Cedartown High and Purks Junior High School year 1965-66 kickstarted the beginning of landmark events in Cedartown. Gwendolyn Sewell was the first African American student to enter the halls of Cedartown High during her freshmen year.
Next door at Purks Junior High her brother, George Sewell, Jr., and Susan Darden, daughter of Sarah and the late Unice Darden, entered junior high. Thus, as early as 1965 these 3 African American students had broken down the barriers of segregation.
Gwendolyn Scales (Gwendolyn Sewell) tells her story:
“Our parents had a meeting at church one Sunday night and asked who wanted or would like go to Cedartown High/Purks Jr. High. I attended Cedartown High and George and Susan attended the junior high. The rest is HISTORY!”
Others followed the next school year.
