The new Dollar General on Piedmont Highway at Cornelius Road is on the rise.

Clearing work on the property in western Polk County slated for the latest retail location for Dollar General began in recent days as site preparation work is underway for the eighth store locally.

The County Commission voted to approve allowing for the zoning change and special land use permit to allow for some deviations for requirements for commercial construction.

Among those included a decrease of 10 parking spots from what is required based on the square footage of the new Dollar General.

Concerns were also raised about the entrance and exit point for the store on Piedmont Highway, but based on the location off of Cornelius Road for the construction entrance and exit, and DOT studies were sought as well.

Two more stores are slated for construction in Polk in the coming months: one on Highway 101 north of Aragon in the Silver Creek area, and a replacement store on West Avenue for the South College Street location.
