New stop signs go up without major issues

New four way stops on College Street have been in place for nearly a week, and thus far no major issues have been reported as drivers are getting used to stopping at a pair of busy intersections in Cedartown.

Chief Jamie Newsome said officers have been keeping an eye on the new four way stops at Girard Avenue and Jule Peek Avenue on North College Street, and reported that the transition so far has been a smooth one.

Despite a few drivers here and there who have been forgetful of the new traffic pattern, Newsome said reports back to him have been positive and drivers are following the rules of the road at the intersections that changed at the beginning of the week.

Drivers on Monday were getting used to the new four-way stops at the intersection of Jule Peek and North College Street in Cedartown.

City Commissioners in February approved the change to the traffic patterns on North College Street at the pair of intersections, along with a permanent change of a four-way stop already in place due to stop light issues where East Avenue meets College Street and Wissahickon Avenue.

The changes are in part an effort to slow down traffic coming onto the busy residential thoroughfare through the north and south sides of Cedartown, but also in preparation for detours to come that will significantly change the way drivers get around in the coming months.

GDOT is still getting everything ready to start a bridge replacement on North Main Street, but once the construction work gets underway a detour will be setup as the street will close at Girard Avenue and just ahead of the bridge on the north side, but major thru traffic will have to go around at Jule Peek Drive down North College Street and back onto Girard Avenue to get back to downtown Cedartown.

Drivers will want to plan ahead for such journeys, and consider using alternate routes to avoid traffic issues to come from the change.
