Officials waiting for answers after body found in apartment over weekend

Cedartown Police and the Polk County Coroner’s Office are hoping that results from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab will help provide answers after the body of a woman was found in a College Drive apartment this past weekend.

Melissa Anderson, 43, was believed to have died more than two weeks ago in her bedroom at the apartment. A cause of death has yet to be determined, but no foul play is believed to be involved. Her body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy and toxicology testing.

Per police officials, Anderson was living with a relative at the time who had been in the home during the weeks she was missing. They were unable to detect the body’s odor due to lack of sense of smell, officials reported. The relative had no reason to believe anything was wrong with Anderson, based on her previous comings and goings from the residence where she stayed.

The relative finally found Anderson after disabling the lock on her bedroom weeks after she died on Saturday, June 9.

Cedartown Police and the Coroner’s Office are still investigating, but thus far have found no evidence for them to believe the death was caused by foul play.

The discovery of Anderson’s body prompted officials to ask the public for a simple task: check on relatives and friends who might have not been heard from in a while in order to ensure they are safe and well.

Expect an additional update as it becomes available from the Coroner’s Office or the Cedartown Police Department.
