Police arrest man reported “shooting” out of car on Antioch Road

Gun, drugs and more found inside car

Altonis Gerald Harris

A Dallas man remained in the Polk County Jail without bond set on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after he was finally stopped by police in Cedartown after being reported for driving down the road and firing a rifle out the window of his car.

Cedartown Police were asked to help out initially and made the arrest at the Gulf Gas Station after 5 p.m. on Monday, March 27, when Altonis Gerald Harris, 32, of a Dallas address (the jail has him listed at a Douglasville address…) was taken into custody after an officer looking for his vehicle found him coming off Cason Road.

Per the report, police saw that Harris was trying to sling a rifle around his back when he was stopped, and officers had to pull him out of the car at gunpoint. Police found an “Smith and Wesson AR style .22 caliber rifle” in the front seat, and it was warm to the touch as if it had been fired. A round was also chambered and ready to fire.

While making an initial search of the car, police also spotted an open bookbag and digital scales commonly used in the drug trade.

Further investigation of Harris found that he had an active warrant and suspended license, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Harris told police that he had been shooting a gun on private property, and that a driver in a white Honda was the culprit for shooting out the window going down the road. He also told officers that he was “paranoid and someone was following him trying to get him.”

A more thorough search of the car turned up a laptop, several bags of clothing, security cameras, tools, baggies, two used meth pipes, pills that belonged to someone else, and a wallet.

While being searched at the jail, officers there also found another baggie of methamphetamine.

Harris remained in custody as of this posting on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, crossing state/county guard line with weapons, intoxicants, drugs without consent, possession of a firearm by convicted felon or first offender, possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He also faces misdemeanor charges for driving while license suspended or revoked and possession and use of drug-related objects.
