
A Cedartown man was jailed after he was stopped by Polk County Police for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk, but ended up in much bigger trouble when he admitted he had a gun on him and was also found with drugs, according to reports.
Polk County Police reported that they arrested Austin Wayne Jones, 24, of a Cedartown address early Friday morning, May 19, 2023 when he was stopped by officers in front of the Gulf Gas Station on South Main Street on his bicycle around 1 a.m.
The report stated that when he initially came into contact with officers, they immediately smelled marijuana on him and asked when was the last time he smoked.
Jones admitted that he “had just finished smoking” and when asked if he had anything illegal, police noted he got nervous and asked if he was about to be searched.
Once it became clear he was in trouble, Jones admitted to officers he had a handgun on him – a Springfield XD-40 .40 caliber. When police continued their search, they found spected methamphetamine and marijuana on his bag.
Police did allow Jones to drop off his bicycle to an Olive Street address before they took him into custody without further incident.
Jones remained in the Polk County Jail with bond denied on felony charges of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, possession of methamphetamine, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by convicted felon or first offender. He also faces misdemeanor charges for bicycle must be on right side of roadway and possession of marijuana.
