Police: Man arrested for an incident in Rockmart hotel parking lot, charged with kidnapping

An Aragon man remains in jail with his bond denied on multiple felony charges after he tried twice to pull an older woman out of a truck to keep her from leaving a Rockmart hotel room, according to a police report on the incident last weekend.

Stephen Cody Brannon, 27, of an Aragon address, was booked on several felony and misdemeanor charges including kidnapping after he was arrested last Saturday in the parking lot of the Western Inn after attempting to pull a 67-year-old woman from a truck, fought with the driver, the manager of the hotel and flee from an officer arriving on the scene when police were called in.

Brannon was stopped by police around 5 p.m. as he was trying to cross Nathan Dean Parkway in Rockmart and leave from the Western Inn, and a strange tale unfolded that ultimately saw him charged with kidnapping.

Those involved with police explained that Brannon, who was staying in the room with the woman listed as a victim, woke after sleeping all day and “started cursing and being rowdy.” The victim also reported that Brannon had a drug problem.

The victim lives in assisted living, and tried to leave the room at the Western Inn and that “Stephen knew she was going back there and that was why he was bent out of shape because he is in a boat without a paddle,” the report stated. The victim also reported to police he had threatened suicide.

After she tried to get in a truck with a neighbor at the Western Inn, Brannon tried to pull her out of the vehicle. That’s when the neighbor informed the manager what was going on. The woman fell out of the truck during the struggle with Brannon, who tried to drag her back to the room. The neighbor ultimately told police Brannon also tried to fight him before police arrived, but he didn’t wish to tangle with the younger man and “keep the peace” until police arrived.

Police reviewed footage of the incident from hotel security incident, and was told by the manager he also tried to drive the victim away but Brannon also tried to get into his vehicle.

Brannon tried to explain to police that the victim was the one to blame, that she “threw fits” and the events of the evening had been another example of that, according to the report. He also changed his story during interviewing before he was placed in handcuffs and placed under arrest, per the report.

He later admitted that he handled the situation poorly, per the officer’s information.

“Stephen stated that he guess it was just from dealing with time and time before and overreacting,” the report stated.

Brannon remains in jail with no bond on felony charges of kidnapping, criminal attempt to commit a felony, elder abuse (exploit/inflict pain to/deprive essential services to disabled person or,) and misdemeanor charges of simple assault under the family violence act, simple assault, simple battery, obstructing law enforcement officers and disorderly conduct.
