POLICE: Man tried to avoid officers, gave false name found with drugs

Brian Alexander Jones

A Cedartown man tried to hide his identity from officers during a traffic stop that began late Thursday and extended into early Friday morning at the Smart Mart on Buchanan Highway in Cedartown, but was ultimately found with drugs during a traffic stop according to Polk County Police reports.

Officers arrested Brian Alexander Jones, 29, of a Cedartown address early Friday after he was stopped by police in the parking lot Smart Mart. Police had arrived at the store while on patrol and noticed Jones coming out of the store with a hood over his head while at the pump next to theirs.

Per the report, Jones continued to try to hide who he was, but officers recognized him later after he pulled into a parking spot after filling up and officers pulled in behind to block him from going anywhere.

Jones initially told police he was “Brian Carney” but they knew that was a false name, and took him immediately into custody for providing a false name. He told police he did so out of nervous habit.

When they searched him, police reported they found three bags of marijuana, and a glass pipe “with a heavy methamphetamine coating inside of it.”

Police collected the drugs and took Jones onward to the Polk County Jail without further incident.

He remained in the Polk County Jail on a $15,500 bond on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, and purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution or sale of marijuana. He’s also booked on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and giving false name, address, or birthdate to law enforcement officers.
