Police: Man with history of running from officers gets away in latest chase

Left behind girlfriend’s car after hitting mailbox, and bag of marijuana in driver’s seat

Police have warrants out for a Rockmart man who fled from police in his girlfriend’s car and got away on foot during an early morning chase that ended in the Aragon area, per Polk County Police.

According to reports, warrants have been taken out for Zyshonne Lauaie Middlebrooks, 24, of a Rockmart address after he was able to get away on foot to end the chase in Aragon just after 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, October 12, 2022.

Per PCPD reports, an officer was patrolling in the area of Prospect Road when they got behind Middlebrooks in a black Ford Fusion and followed it onward to North Bellview Road and then Dogwood Glen Road before Middlebrooks was reported to have failed to maintain his lane.

When the officer tried to pull Middlebrooks over, he instead turned onto Dogwood Lane, sped up and ultimately came to a stop in the caudle sack behind a house after hitting their mailbox. He fled on foot and the officer was unable to keep up and apprehend who they later discovered was Middlebrooks.

A search of the car found his TipTop employee ID badge and a bag of marijuana that was less than an ounce on the driver’s seat.

Other officers arrived on scene and a search began. Police were unable to locate Middlebrooks when he fled early this morning, but with his ID they were able to take out warrants for his later arrest on multiple charges.

Police noted while still on the scene, Middlebrooks’ girlfriend had reached out to Rockmart Police to find out if her car – the Ford Fusion left behind in the chase – was towed or moved because she previously had a flat tire earlier in the day and pulled it over on the isde of the road.

When Rockmart Police came to the scene, they identified it as the girlfriend’s car and notified her what happened. She told officers he had fled from police in the past, which they also noted when they filed the report this morning. She told police he was the only one who knew where the car was at the time, and that she left her key in the ignition after getting the flat in order to fix it later.

Police did further investigate at TipTop as well, and they reported they had “checked on him around (midnight) before the end of his shift.”

Officers did impound the car, and the homeowner was able to repair their mailbox while officers were still on the scene.

Those with further information about the whereabouts of Middlebrooks are asked to contact 911 or the Polk County Police Department at 770-748-7331.
