Police: Taser used on a man who tried to run from officers, drug paraphernalia found in car

Two men were jailed after police caught up with a speeding Chevy Camaro on Johnson Lake Road that pulled over into a yard early Wednesday morning, and saw the driver try to flee on foot only to be tased twice before being taken into custody.

Timothy Brian Pope and Daniel Corn were both arrested on Wednesday around 2 a.m. when Polk County Police officers spotted the pair in a silver Chevrolet Camaro speeding down Johnson Lake Road, so fast that officers at first had trouble keeping them within sight.

Police did watch Pope behind the wheel speed up and pass a truck, and when officers finally were able to gain ground on the pair they turned on their emergency lights and attempted to pull the pair over.

Pope and Corn in the Camaro pulled into the yard of a Johnson Lake residence near Cornelius Road. While Corn stayed put in the passenger’s seat and was detained without any incident, the reporting officer followed Pope on a 150-yard foot chase over fences, deploying his taser once and only getting a slight shock to stun Pope, but ultimately only slowed him down.

A second cartridge from the Taser hit Pope directly in the chest and abdomen and immediately sent him to the ground in shock. He was taken into custody afterward, checked out by EMS to be sure he was fine to go to jail, and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle while officers searched the Camaro.

Police found a pair of digital scales with white residue suspected to be methamphetamine, and in a bookbag where Corn had sat in the passenger seat found plastic bags that police noted are commonly used in the drug trade.

Both men – without first being read their Miranda warning – denied that any of the items were theirs.

Corn, 23, of 417 Chesnut St., Cedartown, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He remained in the Polk County Jail on the pair of felony charges without bond set.

Pope, 32, of Cedartown (with different addresses listed for his residence between police and sheriff’s office records) also remained in jail with a $19,050 bond set, though the list of charges he faces is longer. He faces felonies for possession of methamphetamine and possession of tools for the commission of a crime, as well as misdemeanor charges for improper passing on the left, reckless driving, obstructing law enforcement officers, speeding in excess of maximum limits, and a pair of bond drug charges.
