POLICE: Two jailed during Hwy. 101 traffic stop

One suspect faces traffic charges while another faces drug charges after a stop by Polk County Police ended with two in custody on Tuesday evening, according to reports.

Haley Brianna Thompson, 27, and Deidre Rhea Fuqua, 46, both of a Rockmart address, were arrested by officers around 8:45 p.m. on February 6, 2024 at the intersection of Highway 101 and Mack Jones Road.

Police initially sought to stop the Kia Soul being driven by Thompson for a headlight that was out spotted on Live Oak Road, and when the pair were stopped at the intersection not much further down the road the officer reported that they “saw the passenger side door open for a brief second and then shut real quick.”

Police asked Thompson for her license after finding three people in the vehicle. She told police she had none, and she was taken into custody for driving while her license was suspended or revoked and for the headlight violation. She also later added a charge for failure to maintain insurance. She was placed in the back of a car without further incident.

The officer then went back to the passengers, reported that they smelled marijuana coming from inside the car, and asked for additional information. The two remaining inside were asked to step out. A search of the ground around the vehicle yielded two baggies of what officers suspected was cocaine.

After being questioned, Fuqua admitted to having attempted to throw out the cocaine. She was taken into custody and the third passenger was let go.

Thompson was taken to the Polk County Jail and booked for the misdemeanor traffic offenses and remained in custody as of this posting with a $2,230 bond set.

Fuqua was charged with one count of felony possession of cocaine, and two counts of abandonment of dangerous drugs (a misdemeanor) and two felony counts of tampering with evidence. She remained in jail with no bond set as of this posting.
