A man who fled from a truck that ended up in the ditch is being sought for a meth possession charge, and police arrested a woman who was accused by a witness of ramming that truck off the roadway.
Polk County Police arrested Jessica Louise Jones, 36, of 185 Knox Mountain Road, Rockmart, on a felony bench warrant and misdemeanor charges of failure to report accident with injury/death/damage and reckless driving during an early Tuesday morning incident.
Police also have a warrant out for the arrest of Thomas Daniel Haney, 34, of the same Knox Mountain Road address, who wasn’t at the scene when police later found his truck with methamphetamine during a search of the vehicle.
Reports stated that officers first noted something wrong when a white Nissan Altima on Highway 113 near Cantrell Road, when an officer found Jones on the side of the road with a flat tire. Several officers were on scene, and Jones told police that she believed she hit something. A closer inspection of the vehicle found that it had traded paint with another vehicle, and she was questioned about it. A Rockmart officer also arrived with a K-9, and the report noted that “a positive alert for an illegal/dangerous substance in the vehicle.”
Though the K-9 did alert when walked around the Altima, no charges were filed for any illegal substance possession.
Jones ultimately told officers how she ended up with a flat tire, missing hub cap and paint from another vehicle on her car.
“Ms. Jones stated she went to her and the victim identified as, (Mr. Thomas Haney) residence off Knox Mountain Road, and observed a female in his passenger seat when she arrived at the house,” the report stated. “Ms. Jones stated she wanted to speak with Mr. Haney but he left the scene. Ms. Jones stated she left the residence behind Mr. Haney and followed him down the road way. Ms. Jones stated Mr. Haney started to make a turn and she did not know if she struck his vehicle or not.”
Additional calls about the potential wreck were reported to 911 while they were talking to Jones.
When police found the truck abandoned not long after just north of 2565 Cartersville Hwy. in the ditch, and looked to have been struck on the driver’s side. Officers brought out the K-9 to begin a track when they found footsteps leading away south, but Haney wasn’t found at the scene.
The bag of methamphetamine he left behind in the truck was discovered when officers located it in a sunglasses cases “in the top of the truck.”
A man who stopped when officers returned to the truck after looking for Haney in the immediate area claimed they saw what happened. Police noted the witness told them that the Altima had gotten behind the pickup truck and turned on their high beams, and “then proceeded to get beside the truck and rammed the truck off the highway.”
Police took Jones into custody where she remained as of this posting on a $2,260 bond on the pair of charges.
A warrant was taken out for Haney’s arrest on methamphetamine possession. He was not listed in custody as of this posting.
