Polk County Fair called off for 2020

Another event has been called off due to the pandemic for the year as the Cedartown Exchange Club made an announcement this morning about the status of the Polk County Fair.

“Richard Long, President, of the Polk County Fair Association along with the Cedartown Exchange Club announces with great sadness that the Polk County Fair would be cancelled this year,” was the beginning of the statement announcing the cancellation of the Polk County Fair for 2020. “With concerns over safely serving our visitors and concerns about the health of our dedicated volunteers, entertainers, club members, agricultural participants and carnival workers the Board of Directors feel this is the most prudent choice.”

The Polk County Fair is not alone in their cancellation efforts. The annual Homespun Festival in Rockmart organized by the Polk County Chamber of Commerce was called off this summer due to the pandemic and concerns over the health and safety of visitors and vendors alike. Other events have so far either been pushed back, or are under consideration for being cancelled.

“Fairs across the country have been canceling this year’s events due to the COVID 19 virus. Many of the Northwest Georgia fairs have also followed. We feel we cannot risk the health of our community,” the statement from the fair added.

“The Polk County Fair has been held each fall since 1961. The Fair is a major fundraiser for the Cedartown Exchange Club where it has served Cedartown and Polk County since August 4, 1927. The mission of the Exchange Club is to support youth and the prevention of child abuse. The Polk County Fair
is owned and operated by the Polk County Fair Association,” the statement concluded.

The Exchange Club is working on an alternative to the fair to help raise funds for the organization and those they donate to around Polk County, and information will be forthcoming about their plans as soon as it is available.
