Qualifying wraps up as Aragon City Council race becomes competitive

November ballot will be set after officially on August 31 for the November 2 election

The voters in Aragon will have three candidates to choose from to fill two seats after additional names got added to the ballot before the close of qualifying at noon today.

Aragon City Council incumbent Daniel Johnson will now face Stephen Wilson and Dickie Gazaway in the upcoming municipal election, while Donald E. Canada Jr. will get to fill the remaining term of soon-to-resign city council member Buddy Tanner.

Canada and Wilson both jumped into the race earlier today when they qualified for the upcoming November 2 municipal elections.

Johnson, who ran without opposition and was sworn in before the election last year to serve in a vacant seat, now faces Wilson and Gazaway for one of two seats on the council for full terms. Amy Causey, who holds the other city council seat up for this year, chose not to qualify and hasn’t been to city council meetings for some time as a voting member.

Additionally, depending on whether resolutions are approved by the City Council in their postponed meeting coming up on August 25, city voters might also get to vote on alcohol referendums as well.

Of note, Canada will only serve the final two years of Tanner’s term.

The race in Aragon is the second to become competitive for the upcoming round of elections. Earlier in the week, Will Dover qualified for the Ward 1 Rockmart City Council race against incumbent Joe Henderson.

Incumbents Mike Bradley and Lucile Harris will retain their seats without opposition for the 2021 vote. Rockmart voters citywide will also be voting on alcohol referendums this year as well.

Citywide in Cedartown, an alcohol referendum will help draw people to the polls along with the countywide E-SPLOST resolution since all three of the city commission incumbents qualified without opposition this week.

That will give Commissioners Jessica Payton, Matt Foster, and Sam Branch the opportunity to continue to serve on the board for new four-year terms without the need for a vote this year.

All voters will get a chance to determine whether to continue a one-penny sales tax collection beyond its end for the Education-only Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for the Polk School District, which was approved to go before the voters earlier this month.

Elections Director Brande Coggins reported that the ballot will be finalized and has to be submitted to the state by August 31.
