Release: GBI investigating Cartersville officer-involved shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced this morning that they are further looking into an officer-involved shooting at the Circle K on Joe Frank Harris Parkway in Cartersville early this morning.

Per the GBI release, a suspect was injured and treated for non-life threatening injuries during a morning incident with the Cartersville Police Department.

The CPD were called to the scene at 6:20 a.m. and confronted a suspect who had been reported to have a gun. That suspect, Jose Luis Rivera, 45, was taken to the hospital for treatment after he was shot by an officer who confronted him on the scene, chased him behind the gas station and allegedly took fire from Rivera when the officer shot back and hit Rivera.

Police later recovered a handgun from the scene, and the GBI issued warrants for aggravated assault on a police officer. He’ll face that warrant and potentially other charges following the investigation when he’s released from the hospital. The case will be referred to the Bartow County District Attorney when the investigation is complete.

No other injuries were reported with officers or bystanders.

Witnesses told police that Rivera “fired a gun into the front glass window of the Circle K and pointed a gun at customers in the parking lot,” per the release.

The GBI noted this was the 103rd officer-involved shooting this year in Georgia.
