
An Aragon-area woman was jailed and later released on bond on multiple charges after a DUI wreck ended with the suspect hitting a power pole and attempting to leave the scene, per Polk County Police reports.
Officers booked Cheryl Gilliland Corbett, 62, early Thursday morning after she was released by medical officials to be cleared for arrest and intake to the Polk County Jail.
Per the report, Corbett was found walking down Live Oak Road toward Highway 101 by officers around 9:30 p.m. on January 31 after she attempted to leave a wreck down the road. She told officers at the time she was trying to walk home to her Wax Road residence, but confused her directions. She also attempted to hold her hands to her ears to try and deafen herself to officer’s commands. Police told her she was under arrest for driving under the influence.
Police briefly struggled with Corbett when taking her into custody. After in cuffs, officers struggled to get her into the back of the patrol car and had to help her inside the back. The reporting officer later noted her Toyota Avalon at the crash scene took out the power pole and was found against a tree. While looking inside the car for Corbett’s information (her identity at this point was still unconfirmed) one officer found a half empty and cold beer can in the center cupholder.
Corbett was taken Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center to get a blood and urine sample to determine her blood alcohol limit. Later she was cleared for booking into the Polk County Jail.
She was charged with misdemeanors for DUI – Less Safe – Alcohol, failure to maintain lane, hit and run; duty of driver to stop at or return to scene of accident, open container violation and license: driver without license.
Corbett was released on Feb. 1 on a $3,522 bond.
