Polk County Police arrested a man on Saturday night after a chase reached speeds of 125 mph ended at the Mavis Tire in Rockmart, according to reports.
Officers arrested Salvador Alessandro Abrego, 21, of a Dallas address, on Saturday night, April 6, 2024 in a felony stop at Mavis Tire and Brakes in Rockmart after a chase began on Highway 278 and Coot’s Lake Road. An officer running radar on Highway 278 at Coot’s Lake Road initially clocked Abrego at 95 mph, and he increased his speed getting up to 125 mph heading into Rockmart.
Abrego was forced to slow down and weave around traffic causing other drivers to have to maneuver out of the way until Abrego turned off Nathan Dean Parkway and into Mavis Tire. Officers pulled Abrego out at gunpoint during the felony traffic stop and took him into custody without further incident.
During his arrest, Abrego admitted several times to running from the officer who initially spotted him, and asked how fast he was going at one point and admitted he was going 95 mph.
A search of his car found $4,000 in cash, a Glock 43X 9 mm handgun and a small amount of marijuana that was destroyed on the scene.
Abrego’s cash was left with his car, and his father came to collect it before it was towed away. Police confiscated the handgun and put it into evidence at the Polk County Police Department.
Bond hadn’t been set as of this posting on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and misdemeanor charges of reckless conduct and speeding in excess of maximum limits.
