REPORT: DUI driver tells officers he smoked weed before hitting road gets caught speeding

Jacob Michael Benefield

A Cedartown man was jailed and released hours after his arrest on Tuesday afternoon following a traffic stop for speeding on Highway 27 turned into a DUI, according to reports.

Polk County Police officers arrested Jacob Michael Benefield, 25, of a Cedartown address on Tuesday, June 11 sometime after his traffic stop just before noon on Highway 27.

An officer clocked Benefield going 71 in a 55 mph zone before he was stopped near the intersection of Highway 100 South and Highway 27 South.

The officer also noticed that Benefield did not have his seat belt on prior to the stop, reports stated.

Police reported that when they got to Benefield’s Ford Ranger, they could smell marijuana coming from inside and asked whether he recently had toked before getting behind the wheel.

Benefield is reported to have told police he had just smoked over an hour before his traffic stop. They believed he was unable to drive safely and had him perform field sobriety tests and additional exercises, which he failed.

He was taken into custody on Tuesday midday without further incident during the traffic stop.

Benefield was later bonded out the same day on a $3,500 bond on misdemeanor charges of speeding in excess of maximum limits, DUI – drugs less safe and a seatbelt violation.
