REPORT: Motorcycle rider dies following bypass wreck

A Buchanan man succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital after a wreck on the Highway 27 Bypass early this afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Trooper were called out by local police after emergency personnel responded to the Cedartown bypass near the Cason Road cutoff where they took over the investigation of the fatal collision.

When they arrived, they found a white GMC Sierra work truck had collided with a black Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by Joseph Franklin Owens, 69, of a Buchanan address.

Sadly, Owens did not survive the injuries sustained in the wreck and passed away while being taken to the hospital.

Per the GSP, their preliminary report indicated that the work truck was traveling north on the bypass in the left lane when the driver, Jose Adelson Orellana, made an improper lane change and the motorcycle struck the GMC Sierra. The impact caused the motorcycle to go down to the ground.

GSP reported that Orellana did have injuries related to the crash as well.

The state agency did not have any further information about the incident at this time.

A Motorcycle rider died as a result of their injuries in a wreck reported on the Highway 27 Bypass this afternoon.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome confirmed that a motorcycle rider who collided with a work truck in a wreck died of their injuries. Georgia State Patrol has since been called into take over the investigation on the fatality, Newsome reported.

He did note that no injuries were sustained by the driver of a work truck involved in the wreck.

Traffic is open to one lane on each side of the road at this time, per Newsome.

A fatality has been reported in a wreck on the Highway 27 Bypass in Cedartown, according to a local official.

The Polk County Coroner’s Office was called out this afternoon in the aftermath of the wreck, which took place near the intersection with the Cason Road cutoff and the Highway 27 bypass.

No further information is available about the fatality or other injuries sustained at this time.

Traffic is not blocked at this time, according to officials with knowledge of the situation.
