A homeless man was found with meth and marijuana during a search he consented to during an encounter with police for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk in the early morning hours of Wednesday, according to a PCPD report.
Police stopped Jeffery Daniel Pankey, 65, of no address in Cedartown, while he was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk on South College Street near Ware Street around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3.
The officer explained that Pankey couldn’t ride his bicycle on the sidewalk, and checked his name through the state crimes database and came up with no warrants for his arrest. However, the officer did ask Pankey if he would be comfortable being searched, and Pankey agreed.
When the officer patted him down, he found a baggie of suspected methamphetamine in a shirt pocket. In the report, the officer noted that Pankey “stated he was trying to figure out how it got in that pocket.” The officer immediately took him into custody.
Per the report, the officer also searched his bag and found marijuana inside. It was destroyed on the scene, and Pankey was taken onward to jail without any further incident.
Pankey was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor for bicycle ridden on right side of roadway. He remained in jail on a $5,100 bond.
