REPORT: Man admits marijuana possession when stopped in van by PCPD

Michael David Holtzclaw

A Polk County man remained in jail after being booked following a traffic stop after he admitted to having marijuana hidden in a van in Cedartown that had tags matching another vehicle and several other traffic violations.

According to PCPD reports, Michael David Holtzclaw, 45, of a Cedartown area address, was booked early Sunday morning, May 7 on multiple charges including felony marijuana possession when he was stopped on Canal Street at Georgia Avenue when police patrolling the area saw him driving the van without his headlights on late Saturday night in Cedartown.

Holtzclaw was reported to try and tell the officer his lights were on, but switched them on and off again instead. He was asked if he had a license, and was taken into custody when admitting his license was suspended.

Other officers arrived, and police noted they smelled marijuana coming from the interior.

Holtzclaw admitted to having left some joints on the dash, and when police found a “large bag of marijuana inside of a coffee can in a bucket” admitted all the drugs were his for personal use.

Police had him go through a field sobriety test, and by the time it was completed had determined he was unsafe to drive.

After being taken into custody, the reporting officer looked further into the van and found it was using a plate for a different car, and had no insurance coverage. He told police he bought the van two months prior, and hadn’t remembered who the previous owner was or how he got the tag.

He was taken into custody and booked on a felony marijuana possession charge for the bag – weight was not included in the report – and the joints found in the vehicle, along with misdemeanor charges of DUI drugs, driving while license suspended or revoked, removing or affixing license plate with intent to conceal or misrepresent, no insurance, headlight requirements and unregistered vehicle.

Holtzclaw remained in custody on a $9,100 bond.
