A Cartersville man remains in jail without bond on a pair of charges after he followed a woman from her job in Cartersville all the way to the Rockmart Walmart parking lot, where she was blocked in by his vehicle and in fear for her safety.
According to Rockmart Police reports, Derrick Caswell Smith, 45, of 327 Old Cass White Road, Cartersville, was jailed on misdemeanor charges of stalking and harassing communications after being taken into custody on the afternoon of Friday, April 23 in the Walmart parking lot.
Police reported the victim had told officers she tried to end a relationship with Smith after an incident two days before when a fight ensued and Smith was accused of throwing the victim’s phone in a toilet and choking her.
They found the victim and the suspect both in the parking lot at Walmart, with Smith’s Chevrolet Silverado blocking a Lexus SUV in a parking spot. The victim told police that Smith had sent her 58 unread messages since breaking off a relationship with him, and that he followed her from her work in Cartersville all the way to Rockmart. They found the woman shaking and scared of further physical violence. The victim further told officers she had not yet reported the previous incident to Carterville Police, but was told she could still report the incident to secure a Temporary Protection Order.
Based on the statements from the victim, from a witness and the phone messages, Smith was taken into custody and remains in the Polk County Jail with no bond set.
His only reason for what happened was that “I’ve been through a lot in the past 2 days, you would not understand,” per the report.
