REPORT: Man charged with kidnapping, other charges after confrontation with juveniles

A retired Polk County Public Works employee remained in jail after he took matters into his own hands over juveniles were alleged to have trespassed on his property and held the group at gunpoint during an altercation, per officials with the Polk County Police.

Jerry Barker, 67, a retiree from the County Public Works Department known as “Round Man,” was booked into the Polk County Jail early Monday morning and remains in custody on felony and misdemeanor charges from Polk County Police.

Charges include felony kidnapping, three counts of cruelty to children in the third degree, and possession of firearm or knife during the commission of a crime or attempt to commit certain felonies. He also faces misdemeanor charges of pointing or aiming pistol at another.

Per officials from the Polk County Police, Barker encountered juveniles who were alleged to be around his property late on Sunday night, October 15, and found one still on the phone and forced them by gunpoint into his truck to find his other friends.

Once found, Barker then held the group at gunpoint and lectured the group about trespassing violations on his property.

Following that, the Polk County Police were called and investigated and then took Barker into custody on the felony and misdemeanor charges early on Monday, October 16.

Barker’s bond was set at $20,000.
