An early morning traffic stop saw a Buchanan man taken into custody after police discovered methamphetamine in his pocket he “forgot” was in there, according to a report from the Polk County Police.
Matthew Paul McGuire, 31, of 5496 Jacksonville Road, Buchanan, was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 7, around 1:20 a.m. when he was stopped for a busted tag light on Highway 278 and Fairview Road. Police initially spotted him on Highway 101 and after finding out while running his registration found he had a warrant.
Police reported that McGuire was aware of the warrant, but that it usually he was allowed to go after officers checked his status.
However, this time police asked if they could search McGuire while they were waiting for the status of the warrant. While being patted down, officers first discovered a meth pipe in his pocket, and then another bulge that turned out to be methamphetamine.
McGuire admitted that it was the drug, and “that he had recently purchased it and had also forgotten that it was there,” per the report.
He was taken into custody without further incident, and police also filed paperwork to seize his truck.
Bond had not yet been set as of this posting on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor charges of possession and use of drug-related objects and tag lights required.
