Polk County Police took a Rockmart man into custody on Monday night after he was pulled over for an expired tag and broken tail light and was found with drugs in the car, reports stated.
Zachary Stanton Shirah, 28, of 1293 Bellview Road, Rockmart, was arrested by Polk County Police after he was pulled over in a 1999 Buick Century just after 9 p.m. near the intersection of Cedartown Highway and Prospect Road in the Rockmart area after he trailed behind police, was allowed to pass and was found with a busted tail light on the left side.
When police ran the tag prior to the stop, they found his registration was expired.
Shirah told police that he didn’t have a driver’s license, and instead handed over an identification card. Police reported smelling marijuana coming from the car, and he also continued to search for a license he had just told officers he didn’t have.
During the stop, the reporting officer called for a Sheriff’s Office K-9 to come out and conduct a “free air sniff” of the vehicle, was patted down for weapons, and when the police dog finally began his search Shirah “became very angry and called his father on the phone” claiming that he had been stopped illegally.
“Shirah then said that the dog bit his door handle and tag and “destroyed” it,” the report stated.
Reports stated that a thorough search of the exterior of the vehicle showed no signs prior to a tow truck carrying it away that the dog had caused any kind of damage.
Ultimately, police found a pipe in the center console with white residue inside that Shirah claimed might have been a relatives. Officers also found marijuana inside of a cigarette pack, and a “large joint that appeared to have been dipped in some substance.”
He remained in custody with no bond set on a lone felony charge of possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor charges of possession and use of drug related objects, no license on person, expired registration, and tag lights required.
Shirah had previously been booked in May for forgery and theft by receiving stolen property charges.
