A Kennesaw man was denied bond after he attempted to get away from police during a high speed chase that ended in Cedartown after he struck the front end of a patrol vehicle and was ultimately tackled to the ground when attempting to further flee on foot.
Polk County Police charged Donte Joshua Freeman, 34, of a Kennesaw address, with multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after he fled from officers on patrol around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning starting in the area of Youngs Farm Road and Highway 27.
Police attempted to stop the car after Freeman exhibited some unexpected driving behavior around a pair of officers on patrol, and for a moment it looked as if everything was going as a normal traffic stop.
Then Freeman sped off after he looked as if he was going to pull over his 2011 Honda Civic.
Reports stated that speeds hit at least 100 mph heading northbound on Highway 27, and after police reached the intersection with South Main Street he initially slowed down as if he were going toward downtown Cedartown, but sped up and remained on the bypass.
Police noted that during the chase they watched Freeman toss items out of the passenger window of the car while driving at high speed, and then made a left onto Lee’s Chapel Road and headed back toward town, going upward of 80 mph at the time.
He was finally stopped when he tried to turn onto West Gibson Street after avoiding a parked car while turning onto South Main and running into the front of a Polk County Police patrol vehicle joining the chase when turning onto West Gibson.
Cedartown Police officers also involved at the end of the incident were able to tackle Freeman to the ground after he tried to get away on foot once his car was stopped.
Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd said no officers were injured during the incident. The damage to the patrol vehicle was estimated to cost at least $2,000 to repair.
Officers did go back to the area where Freeman was alleged to have thrown contraband out of the window, but nothing was found. Officers did note a open container was found inside the car, and they smelled alcohol coming from Freeman’s breath once they took him into custody. Police did note that evidence collected included a plastic baggie with suspected methamphetamine inside, but did not indicate where it was located.
The officer whose vehicle was struck was taken to Atrium Health Floyd Polk Medical Center to be evaluated. Freeman was checked out by AdventHealth Redmond EMS personnel before being taken to the Polk County Jail.
He faces felony charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, aggravated assault, possession of methamphetamine, tampering with evidence and interference with government property. Freeman was also charged with misdemeanors for failure to maintain lane, three counts of obstructing law enforcement officers, reckless driving, DUI, and driving on wrong side of roadway.
