A man who attempted to kill himself in a wreck in November 2021 is now facing charges from Georgia State Patrol and Polk County Police for that incident.
The Polk County Police and Georgia State Patrol both took charges out against Michael Bryan Reynolds, 57, of a Carrollton address, after a November 16, 2021 incident saw him drive deliberately into the front of a logging truck at the intersection of Fullwood Springs Road and Tallapoosa Highway.
Following the wreck, an off-duty Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome was one of the first on the scene to find Reynolds entrapped within a pickup truck and attempting to help him, and despite severe injuries to his face he was able to speak.
When a Polk County Police officer arrived on scene to help, he spat on the officer and cussed at him, and the officer immediately went back to his vehicle. The officer also checked on the the driver of the logging truck, who was reported as uninjured in the incident at the time.
As additional help arrived and the officer cleaned blood and saliva off of him, the report stated that Reynolds was still talking and admitted that he “deliberately drove his truck head on into the log truck in attempt to commit suicide” and gave reasons for why he wanted to die. Ultimately Georgia State Patrol took over control of the wreck scene for further investigation, and by then Reynolds was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee for emergency treatment.
Following the spitting incident, tests were completed, and fortunately the exposure didn’t result in any negative impacts to the officer who was spat upon.
Reynolds now nearly two years later has recovered from his wounds, and was booked into the Polk County Jail on Tuesday by the PCSO deputies.
He faces a felony charge of obstructing law enforcement officers and misdemeanor charges of simple battery against police officer, driving on wrong side of roadway, reckless driving, too fast for conditions and failure to maintain lane.
Reynolds remained in custody without bond set on the charges as of this posting.
