A Rockmart-area man remains in custody after a Sunday morning domestic assault where he was accused of trying to choke the victim, according to Polk County Police reports.

Derek Eugene Mathis, 44, of a Rockmart address, was booked into custody on Sunday and remained in the Polk County Jail on felony charges following his arrest by the Polk County Sheriffs Office.

Deputies took Mathis into custody after Polk County Police got information from the victim that Mathis attempted to keep the victim from leaving the bathroom during an argument, then once they opened a window and screamed for help let them out.

The argument continued as the victim got out and made their way to the kitchen, where Mathis is alleged to have attacked again and attempted to choke the victim with a shirt.

The victim was able to get away a second time and ultimately fled to their neighbor’s house, where 911 had already been called.

Mathis fled the scene after that and went to a relatives house, where Sheriffs deputies requested to help found Mathis and took him into custody once Polk County Police had the information in hand they needed to secure an arrest.

Mathis remains in the Polk County Jail on felony charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment.

Bond was not yet set for either of the charges.
